Khatri’s hold an unique status in the Varna system as evidences suggests that they were warriors who later on took trade or merchandise as their business. Based on religion Khatri’s can be classified as Sanatan Khatris (hindu), Arya Samaj Khatris(hindu), Sikh Khatri. It is known that all the ten Sikh Gurus were Khatris. Khatris are active in the role of administrators, rulers and welfare in Punjab and military roles outside Punjab.
Khatri matrimony ceremonies are elaborate performing all traditional rituals that last through the night. Godh Bharai is the first pre wedding ceremony celebrated wishing prosperous and flourished future life of alliances. This ceremony is followed by Kangana and Mehendi. The wedding ceremony includes Seedhe Haath Tanni Kadai (more similar to haldi ceremony), Chooda ceremony, Baraat, Jaimala, Kanyadaan, Gath Bandhan and pheras.
Bari Palang is the unique ritual where newly married couples sits on the nuptial bed and bride takes a handful of rice and throws it over her straight direction where ladies try to collect rice grains in their dupattas and pallus. It is believed that the good luck is in the favor to those who gathers more grains. ’Bedi Lutna’ is another special joyful ritual where young cousins and children steal the wedding attire and adornments soon after the ceremony. Khatri marriage celebrates this ceremony with most unique rituals.
